Tax relief available for some taxpayers affected by severe April storms

The IRS says individuals and businesses in more than 20 Texas counties affected by severe storms, including tornadoes and flooding in parts of Texas in late April, can now apply for tax relief.

Households and individuals residing in the following counties may receive tax relief:

Bell, Calhoun, Collin, Cooke, Denton, Eastland, Guadalupe, Hardin, Harris, Henderson, Jasper, Jones, Lamar, Liberty, Montague, Montgomery, Polk, San Jacinto, Trinity, Tyler, Walker and Waller counties.

The Fort Bend and Galveston areas are not mentioned in the IRS list.

KTRH money man Pat Shinn said everyone’s situation will be different, so seeking help from a tax professional is a smart move.

“Consult a tax professional and see if this relief applies to you,” Shinn said.

Additionally, relief is possible for all residents in these counties, even if they did not experience storm damage.

“This applies to everyone, even if you didn’t have storm damage,” Shinn confirmed.

The IRS also announced that it has extended various filing deadlines. Qualified taxpayers now have until November 1, 2024 to file various federal individual and business income tax returns.
