An hours-long barricade in Silver Spring, Maryland, ended early Thursday morning with the killing of a man by Montgomery County police officers.

The situation began around 11:40 p.m. Wednesday night after police received a call from a family member about a person in distress at an apartment at 3300 Hampton Point Drive. Montgomery County Police spokeswoman Shiera Goff said an armed adult male was in the apartment with his mother.

When officers arrived on the scene, gunshots were heard in the apartment. Additional police, including a SWAT team, were called to the residence while patrol officers began negotiating with the man.

Sometime after 2 a.m., police decided to enter the apartment. Officers entered the apartment and shot the man. He was taken to a hospital where he later died.

His mother and no other residents were injured, Goff said.

The man was not identified.

Thomas Lester of the Maryland Attorney General’s Division of Independent Investigations said all officers involved in the shooting were wearing body-worn cameras. The footage will be reviewed and released to the public within 20 business days.

Goff said the investigation was still in its early stages and further details would be released shortly.

Under Maryland law, the Attorney General’s Division of Independent Investigations will conduct the investigation going forward.
