Buffalo man arrested after robbery, assault outside library

A robbery and assault Friday afternoon in the plaza outside the Lafayette Square Central Library resulted in the arrest of a Buffalo man, Erie County Sheriff John C. Garcia reported.

Jacob Schneider, 38, is charged with third-degree robbery, third-degree assault and resisting arrest and is wanted on a Pennsylvania arrest warrant, Garcia said. He is being held at the Erie County Detention Center.

According to the report, deputies were called to the library around 3:15 p.m. for reports of a fight in progress.

Officers saw Schneider walking away from the scene and screaming, Garcia said. After witnesses said he was involved in the incident, he ignored deputies’ requests to stop and was apprehended on Main Street after a short pursuit, Garcia said.

Schneider allegedly confronted someone in front of the library, searched him, took two $20 bills from his pocket, then punched him several times. According to the report, the victim did not fight back and security officers quickly ended the incident.
