2 boys riding bikes home from candy store hit by vehicle in Buffalo Township

Two 13-year-old boys riding their bikes home from a candy store were injured Friday evening when they were struck by a vehicle in Buffalo Township.

One of the boys was seriously injured in the crash and was flown to UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, while the other boy suffered minor injuries and was taken by family members to a local hospital, according to Buffalo Township Police Chief Tim Derringer.

“They were coming back from a local candy store,” Derringer said.

The bikes and vehicle were all traveling west when the crash happened shortly before 7 p.m. near 218 Cole Road, Derringer said.

The boys are residents of the town.

Police are investigating an initial indication that sun glare may have prevented the driver of the vehicle from seeing the bikes, according to Derringer.

“The vehicle remained on site,” he said. “The driver stopped immediately and is fully cooperating.”

There were no witnesses to the crash, but police are hoping to obtain footage of the incident from neighborhood residential cameras, Derringer said.

Cole was closed at the intersection of Parker Road as township police summoned a state police crash reconstruction team to assist in the investigation.
