Weather warning day for strong to severe storms in Maryland

Weather warning day for strong to severe storms in Maryland

BALTIMORE – After a nice start to our work week, heat and humidity will increase today ahead of a cold front that is likely to produce strong to severe storms.

We begin this WARNING DAY with morning temperatures between 18 and 21 degrees. Highs will reach record highs this afternoon, with mid to high 35 degrees likely across the region. The record high at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport is 99°, and we are forecasting highs of 98°. Heat index values between 100° and 105° are expected for many locations.

A cold front will arrive in the late afternoon, bringing showers and thunderstorms that will last into the night. Depending on how hot and humid it will be, some of the storms could be severe, with damaging wind gusts being the main danger. The possibility of isolated hail and a brief tornado cannot be ruled out, but wind damage appears to be the main danger of any storms that do occur.

Rain chances will likely continue through Thursday morning, especially in southern Maryland, before tapering off. Clouds will clear in the afternoon as heat and humidity also decrease. Temperatures will be in the 80s to 90s.

It will be hot again this weekend with highs of around 35 degrees on Saturday and around 35 degrees on Sunday. Unfortunately, showers and thunderstorms are possible on both days and there is a chance that some of the storms will be severe.
