Houston pools can’t open due to nationwide lifeguard shortage, here’s how you can help 🛟🏊

HOUSTON – Pool season is in full swing. and arguably the best way to beat the sweltering Texas heat is to take a dip in the pool. However, options for where to swim in Houston are limited, due to a nationwide shortage of lifeguards.

Fortunately, people in need of summer employment still have plenty of time to apply for a lifeguard position!

KPRC 2’s Zach Lashaway spoke with a representative from the Houston Parks and Recreation Department’s aquatics office to learn more about the pool shortage. This is where we learned that Zach was once a lifeguard and described it as one of the best experiences of his life.

If you know someone looking for summer employment, the City is offering $500 incentives to those who work all summer.

To be eligible, candidates must meet the following conditions:

• Must be 16 years old by May 31, 2024

• Must pass standard lifeguard swimming assessment

• Must successfully complete American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, offered/approved by HPARD Aquatic Administration

• Must pass a physical exam, drug test and criminal background check

• Have reliable transportation

Currently, the following positions are available, and here’s what they pay:

• Lifeguard: $16/hour

• Helmet: $18/hour

• Aquatic center supervisor: $20/hour

Now let’s talk about this $500 incentive: $250 is paid during the first two weeks after hire, no later than June 30. And then the remaining $250 is paid after you complete the last two weeks of work until the end of the season.
