Mass shooting in Akron, Ohio, kills one and injures 24

AKRON, Ohio (KDKA) — One person was killed and two dozen people injured in a mass shooting in Akron, Ohio, Sunday morning.

Akron police responded to a report of gunfire in the area of ​​Kelly and Eighth Avenue just after midnight, CBS affiliate WOIO reported. According to the TV station, police said a 27-year-old man was killed and 24 other people were injured. Neighbors told the TV station that the shooting occurred at a birthday party.

“We just heard what sounded like fireworks,” Jehovah Jones told WOIO. “I thought it was the Fourth of July. Then I saw cars and everyone running. I was petrified.”

WOIO reported that at least two of the victims were in critical condition. Some victims were reportedly released from the hospital on Sunday. The 27-year-old man killed has not been identified.

When police arrived at the scene, area hospitals reported that people with gunshot wounds had been admitted to the emergency room, WOIO reported.

In a press conference Sunday evening, police said the victims’ ages ranged from 19 to 43, WOIO reported. Police added they believe someone fired shots at the partygoers from a car, with some of the partygoers returning fire.

“This morning, our city is reeling from the devastation caused by senseless violence,” said a joint statement from Akron Mayor Shammas Malik and Akron Police Chief Brian Harding. “With more than two dozen victims, the pain and trauma is felt throughout Akron today as we search for answers. As with all acts of violence in our city, our thoughts are with the victims and their families.”

Police found two firearms and more than 35 bullet casings at the scene. The investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been made and police have not released any information about the suspects.

“We will bring those responsible to justice and we need the help of our community to do so,” the joint statement said.
