5 dead, 4 rescued in Heilongjiang coal mine incident

Five people died in a coal mine in Hegang, Heilongjiang Province on Monday evening, according to a statement released by Hegang Mining Holding Group Co. on Tuesday.

A leak occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Monday when workers injected liquid carbon dioxide into a closed area of ​​the group’s Xing’an coal mine, a preliminary investigation showed. Nine people were trapped.

Four of the nine trapped people were rescued.

The investigation into the cause is ongoing.
