BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Sabers have promoted minor league head coach Seth Appert to assistant on Lindy Ruff’s newly hired staff.

This decision was announced Monday, three days after the elimination of the Rochester Americans in the second round of the American Hockey League playoffs. Appert went 123-94-22-10 in four seasons with the Amerks, where his experience developing the team’s young core of players will help familiarize the new Ruff with the Buffalo team.

The Sabres, in the midst of a record 13-season NHL playoff drought, are in transition with Ruff returning to Buffalo for a second coaching stint following Don Granato’s firing last month. Appert previously spent 11 seasons coaching the men’s team at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and three years in the USA Hockey developmental program.

The Sabers also promoted American video coordinator Amir Gulati to the same role with the NHL team.
