A man has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for violent and sexual crimes against three women and a child.

Alastair Nicolson, 55, was convicted at the High Court in Edinburgh and placed on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely.

Following a trial at the High Court in Inverness in May, he was found guilty of several offences, including the rape of a child.

The crimes occurred between January 1991 and April 2001 in the Highland and Argyll and Bute areas.

The court also granted indefinite restraining orders preventing Nicolson from making or attempting to contact three victims.

Nicolson repeatedly hit a woman.

He pulled her hair, hit her on the head, insulted her and threatened her with a knife, hammer and scissors.

The court heard how he beat her on the body with a poker and a coal bucket and then strangled her.

The 55-year-old was also convicted of multiple rapes of a woman.

Nicolson was found to have engaged in lewd, indecent and lascivious practices and behaviour towards a young girl and subsequently raped the child, who was under 16 years of age.

“Frightening and disturbing”

He brutally attacked a third woman, grabbing her by the neck and threatening to hit her.

The fourth victim was repeatedly beaten and kicked.

Nicolson put out a cigarette on her body, headbutted her and slapped her.

In a separate attack, he knocked out the woman’s tooth, threw her to the ground, kicked her in the head and threatened to kill her.

Sergeant Jennifer Ramsay said: “Nicolson committed these horrific crimes over a number of years with little thought for the lasting impact on his victims.

“It is difficult to understand how horrific and stressful this ordeal was for her.

“I hope this verdict brings them some comfort and sends a clear message that all sex crimes are thoroughly investigated, regardless of how much time has passed.”

“I can assure anyone who wishes to report a sexual or violent crime that we will always investigate the case and that you will be listened to and supported.”
