Youth-led organization shares resource guide to help homeless youth

HOUSTON (KIAH) – According to the City of Houston, between 2011 and 2013, more than 10,000 children were registered as homeless in Harris County school districts. Unfortunately, this number is increasing.

The City of Houston says studies show that in Houston and Harris County, most homeless youth are between 18 and 21 years old. About 150,000 homeless youth live here in Houston. Youth Collective Action is a youth-led non-profit organization working to bring change to young people in need. Last week, the nonprofit introduced a Homeless Resource Guide to provide a resource from the perspective of youth who have also experienced homelessness in order to help those currently recovering from homelessness.

The guide will help young people prepare for success through education, learning new skills and more. Danielle Stephens is a member of Collective Action for Youth’s Homelessness Demonstration program and says resources need to be improved to continue helping young people in need. “All of these resources and things that we have need to evolve so that all of these barriers that are in place, everyone doesn’t feel like I’m being left out when I also need help. too,” Stephens said.
