Man found dead in stream in northern Arizona after hiking with young son

YAVAPAI COUNTY (AZFamily) – A father has died after falling into a creek while hiking with his 6-year-old son at Lawrence Crossing near Rimrock in Yavapai County, according to police.

Yavapai County Sheriff’s officials responded to a call about a possible body in the creek around 5:30 p.m. Saturday. When they arrived, rescue crews were already on the scene with the victim’s uncle.

According to the uncle, the victim, a 51-year-old man, and his 6-year-old son were driving from Tucson to camp for a few days. The uncle said that after leaving his house, his nephew later called and said he was missing.

The uncle drove to Lawrence Crossing, saw his nephew’s vehicle, and then went down to the creek where he found the man face down in several inches of water.

The 6-year-old son told investigators that his father fell backwards into the water, couldn’t breathe and “couldn’t get out.” The sheriff’s office said the child was taken home by family members and would be reunited with his mother later Monday.

Investigators are still looking into what led to the man’s death. His name has not been released.
