At a press conference at 10 a.m. on May 17, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo and City of Houston Mayor John Whitmire provided updates following the May 16 severe weather and widespread power outages.

In a word

Hidalgo said the Houston area had winds of 80 to 100 mph.

“We were unlucky last night weather-wise,” Hidalgo said. “It’s rare for these kinds of things to happen. This type of wind is something we haven’t seen in Harris County since Hurricane Alicia in 1983.”

Hidalgo said there was a tornado near Cypress that headed toward the downtown metro area.

“It’s really sporadic damage, where you might have one house or street (damaged) and the next one is fine,” Hidalgo said. “That’s just the nature of this sort of thing.”

Hidalgo said this disaster should be discussed in “weeks, not days.”
