According to authorities, an Atmore man was arrested on drug charges on July 12.

Atmore Police Department spokesman Sergeant Darrell McMann said in a press release that 35-year-old Derek Staples was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

McMann said the arrest came after an APD officer conducted a traffic stop on Jack Springs Road around 8:10 p.m. on July 12 for a driver not having his headlights on.

“During the conversation between the officer and the driver, later identified as Derek Staples, 35, of Atmore, one of the officers noticed a small plastic bag containing a green, leaf-like substance that was clearly visible,” McMann said. “Officers conducted a probable cause search and recovered several dozen grams of marijuana and a digital scale.”

Staples was subsequently taken to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton.
