Months-long investigation leads to seizure of $90,000 worth of gasoline, $44,000 worth of cash and credit card skimming devices: Santa Clara County Sheriff

(KRON) — Two East Bay suspects were arrested after a two-month investigation into a “sophisticated gasoline and identity theft ring,” the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office (SCCSO) said Monday. Hundreds of gallons of gasoline valued at $90,000, credit card skimmers and $44,000 in cash were seized.

The investigation began after an identity theft victim reported that his credit card was used at a Safeway – even though he had not made a purchase there. According to SCCSO, the suspects are accused of using stolen credit card information to purchase thousands of dollars worth of gas at a Safeway gas station in Santa Clara County.

The gasoline was later discovered in large 300-gallon containers in a delivery truck at the Port of Oakland (pictured below). Authorities said the gasoline was later sold to customers.

According to SCCSO, over $90,000 worth of gasoline and diesel fuel had been stolen as of Monday. Both suspects have been charged with organized shoplifting, conspiracy and other crimes, according to SCCSO.

The identities of the suspects have not been disclosed.
