According to local emergency services, four people died and 16 were injured when a two-story building collapsed on the Spanish island of Mallorca.

Several people are said to be trapped on the premises of the Medusa Beach Club, a beach restaurant on Calle Cartago in the regional capital Palma de Mallorca.

The incident reportedly occurred at around 8:30 p.m. local time (7:30 p.m. CET). There are fears that several people may be trapped in the rubble.

Emergency services told local media that they had completed rescue operations and secured the area shortly after midnight local time.

On Thursday evening, the floor of the restaurant collapsed, causing people to fall into the basement below, where customers and employees were also located.

Palma fire chief Eder García told local media that most of those affected by the collapse were foreigners and tourists, El Pais reported.

A local police spokesman told reporters the balcony may have collapsed because too much weight was placed on it, but stressed the exact cause was still being investigated.

A man with a broken arm was pulled from the rubble. Rescue workers believe more people are trapped. Officials asked onlookers to remain silent so they could hear the voices of survivors.

The mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez, is said to have travelled to the scene of the accident together with the deputy mayor for tourism.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.

He said he was closely following the latest developments and his government was ready to provide all necessary assistance.

Mallorca is the largest of the Spanish Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean.

Last year more than 17 million people visited the island.
