15-year-old from Champaign allegedly shot two people in a car

July 31—CHAMPAIGN — A 15-year-old Champaign boy has been charged in connection with a shooting earlier this month that left two people injured.

Champaign police said officers were called to Fire Station 3 at 702 W. Bradley Ave. after two people were brought there with possibly life-threatening gunshot wounds at 2:45 a.m. on July 20.

Champaign Fire Department officials and personnel quickly rendered medical aid to a 16-year-old boy from Champaign and an 18-year-old woman from Dewey. Both victims were then transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital where they were treated and later released.

An initial investigation revealed that the victims were driving westbound in the area of 3900 Colleen Drive when a 15-year-old male approached the vehicle and fired several shots, striking the occupants.

During the investigation, a weapon was seized and the suspect was arrested on July 24 for illegal possession of a firearm.

After investigating the weapons allegations, the Champaign County District Attorney’s Office amended the charges on Wednesday to add aggravated assault with a firearm in connection with the incident.

Although an arrest has already been made, officers are continuing to search the area for witnesses and video footage that may assist in the investigation, Champaign police said. Any residents or businesses in the nearby area with outdoor surveillance cameras are asked to notify the police department. Future updates may be provided as they become available.
