Gordon Ramsay had a bad bicycle accident, as the celebrity chef announced on Instagram.

“Unfortunately, I had a really bad accident and it has devastated me,” Ramsay, 57, told his followers in a video message shared on Saturday.

“Honestly, I’m lucky to be here. The incredible trauma surgeons, doctors, nurses and hospital that have taken care of me this week have been just incredible,” he continued.

“But honestly, you have to wear a helmet. I don’t care how short the ride is. I don’t care that these helmets cost money. But they are essential. Even with children and on short rides, you have to wear a helmet.”

Ramsay also shared a photo of himself with his racing bike before the accident and another photo showing the aftermath of his helmet hitting the asphalt.

In the video, he also gave a glimpse of his horrific bruise, which he jokingly said looked like a “purple potato.”

The MasterChef judge thanked “all the doctors, nurses and staff at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London” who cared for him and urged everyone to wear helmets and “take care of yourselves.”

Ramsay, who has six children with his wife Cayetana “Tana” Ramsay, sent the important message shortly before Father’s Day.
