NEW DELHI: The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has officially disaffiliated from the suspended International Boxing Association (IBA) and joined the newly formed World Boxing Association (WB). The decision underlines the BFI’s commitment to provide a platform for Indian boxers to compete at the highest level.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had previously raised serious concerns about the IBA’s governance, financial management and integrity of the sport, which ultimately led to the IBA’s de-registration in 2019. The IOC reiterated its stance, stating that the inclusion of boxing in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games is contingent on national federations distancing themselves from the IBA.

Recognising the gravity of the situation, BFI President Ajay Singh emphasised the paramount importance of participation in the Olympic Games for the sustainability of the sport and expressed his confidence in the ability of the World Boxing Federation to secure a better future for boxers worldwide.

Founded in April 2023 under the leadership of former IBA presidential candidate Boris van der Vorst, World Boxing is committed to upholding the Olympic values and ensuring the continued presence of boxing within the Olympic Movement. The organization has already entered into a formal dialogue with the IOC, which represents a positive step towards achieving this goal.

The BFI’s application for membership was approved by the General Assembly and now awaits ratification by the Board of Directors of the World Boxing Federation. This step is intended to strengthen the World Boxing Federation’s presence in Asia and consolidate its position as a credible governing body for the sport.

The IOC will oversee boxing at the upcoming 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. These will be the second Olympic Games in a row without the involvement of the IBA. This development underlines the need for a unified and transparent governing body to secure the future of the sport. The BFI’s decision to join World Boxing reflects a proactive approach to managing this critical turning point in international boxing.
