The Russell County deputy killed in the line of duty was a former LMPD officer

RUSSELL SPRINGS, Ky. (WAVE) – Kentucky State Police are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that left both the officers and a deputy dead.

The shooting occurred in Russell County on September 16 at approximately 5:27 p.m. KSP and the Russell County Sheriff’s Office were conducting an investigation on Bluebird Drive in Russell Springs when the shooting occurred.

Russell County Sheriff Derek Polston said Phipps was shot while trying to find a suspect who had fled.

According to KSP, the suspect was hospitalized in critical condition and later died. RCSO Deputy Josh Phipps, who had been with the agency for three years, was also killed.

Governor Andy Beshear and Attorney General Russell Coleman released a statement shortly after Phipps’ death was confirmed.

“Tragic news for our state: Last night, a Russell County deputy was killed in the line of duty. Britainy and I ask all of Kentucky to join us in praying for his family, his colleagues and the entire Russell County community.” Said Governor Beshear.

“Tonight, Russell County Sheriff’s Deputy Joshua Phipps completed his service to his county and Commonwealth. All of Kentucky mourns his loss and honors his selfless sacrifice. Along with Deputy Phipps’ brothers and sisters in uniform across Kentucky and across the country, we send our prayers and condolences to his family and colleagues. The full resources of the Attorney General’s Office and our Department of Criminal Investigations (DCI) stand ready to support the Russell County Sheriff’s Office and this community during this tragic time.” said Attorney General Coleman.

Phipps was a former officer with the Louisville Metro Police Department. The LMPD said he began working with the department on June 22, 2020, and later resigned on May 6, 2021, for personal reasons.

KSP detectives are currently investigating the officer-involved shooting.
