14-year-old Texas boy is hit and killed after leading police on a highway chase

A 14-year-old Texas boy was struck and killed by a car Wednesday night after leading police on a car and foot chase on the highway, authorities said.

The pursuit occurred around 9:50 p.m. in the 14000 block of State Highway 288 northbound in Pearland, about 21 miles southeast of Houston, Pearland police said in a news release.

The teenager behind the wheel lost control of the vehicle and struck the concrete guardrail in the center, officials said. After the crash, the boy ran across the main lanes of southbound State Highway 288.

The officer lost sight of the boy as he ran away from the scene of the accident, the press release said.

About five minutes later, someone called Pearland Dispatch to report an accident involving a car and a pedestrian in the southbound lanes of State Highway 288. Officers arrived at the scene and found that the 14-year-old boy had been struck by a car while attempting to cross the southbound lanes.

Officers performed CPR on scene and an ambulance arrived to take the boy to Ben Taub Hospital. He was later pronounced dead.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact Pearland police at (281) 997-4100.
