Buffalo Bills defensive end Damar Hamlin has been released from a Cincinnati hospital and transferred to a Buffalo facility, a week after suffering cardiac arrest and collapsing during a Monday Night Football game.

Hamlin, whose heart was restarted on the field, was transferred to Buffalo General for further treatment, doctors said in a conference call Monday afternoon.

“We are pleased and proud to announce that Damar Hamlin has been released from the hospital and returned to Buffalo,” the University of Cincinnati Medical Center said in a statement. “He is doing well and this is the next step in his recovery.”

Buffalo General Hospital said Hamlin was in stable condition and “continues to make significant progress in his recovery.”

Hamlin tweeted minutes after the press conference announcing his return to Buffalo.

“I returned home to Buffalo today with so much love in my heart. Seeing the world come together around me on Sunday was such an incredible feeling,” he wrote. “The same love you all showed me is the same love I intend to spread to the world and more.”

Hamlin collapsed suddenly after tackling Bengals receiver Tee Higgins on Jan. 2. He was quickly surrounded by medical personnel, who performed CPR and restarted his heart before he was loaded into an ambulance and taken to the nearest hospital. The game was suspended and then canceled.

He also thanked his doctors in a tweet Monday afternoon: “I am grateful for the exceptional care I received at UCMC. I am happy to be back in Buffalo. The doctors and nurses at Buffalo General have already made me feel right at home!”

Hamlin, 24, had his breathing tube removed early Friday morning and was up and walking around the medical unit the same day, Dr. Timothy Pritts and Dr. William Knight said at Monday’s briefing.

“We are especially grateful for Damar’s performance,” Pritts said.

Doctors also said Hamlin suffered no brain injuries and had made good progress with physical therapy.

Knight said some of Hamlin’s teammates accompanied him to the Cincinnati airport.

In Buffalo, Hamlin will remain under strict surveillance.

“He’s going to be observed and monitored to make sure there’s no impact from the flight on his condition or his lungs,” Knight said, adding that Hamlin will undergo tests to try to determine the cause of the collapse.

Bills coach Sean McDermott said at Monday’s news conference that he had the opportunity to visit Hamlin at the hospital before coming to the team’s facility.

“I’m really happy to have him back in Buffalo. I had a chance to see him a few minutes ago,” McDermott said. “He’s doing well, a little tired, but it’s good to see him in person for the first time in a while.”

“He seemed happy to be back in Buffalo, in a place that was familiar to him,” he added. “He’s taking it one step at a time.”

The NFL paid tribute to Hamlin across the league Sunday, the first day of games since his collapse. Players across the league wore “Love for Damar” T-shirts before the game, while the Bills wore a No. 3 patch on their jerseys.

The Bills returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown in their game against the New England Patriots and won 35–24 to secure the second seed in the playoffs.

Hamlin, a sophomore at the University of Pittsburgh, shared a photo with his parents from his hospital bed a half-hour before the game Sunday and tweeted several times as he watched the Bills and tributes from around the league.
