Teenager allegedly shot and killed by second teen while playing with gun at St. James Apartments in southwest Houston, police say

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The Houston Police Department is investigating what led to an alleged accidental shooting of a teenager early Sunday morning in southwest Houston.

The incident happened at the St. James Apartments in the 9100 block of Fondren Road around 2:30 a.m.

According to initial reports, three teenagers were alone in an apartment and playing with a gun before the gun went off, hitting one of the teenagers in the stomach, police said.

Investigators said one of the teens, who lived there and had the gun, left the scene while the other stayed and called 911.

“The owner of this firearm or resident of this location, a young man, fled the scene with a firearm. The witness stayed at the scene and called police,” HPD Lt. Riley said.

Investigators said the victim, believed to be around 14 to 15 years old, died at the scene before first responders arrived.

The teen who fled the scene was found and arrested a short time later. ABC13 cameras at the scene captured the moment HPD officers handcuffed the suspect and saw him being placed in the patrol car.

The relationship between the three teens is unclear, police said.
