Madrasa in Medak attacked by mob, Section 144 imposed

At least four people were injured when a right-wing Hindu mob attacked a madrasa in Medak district of Telangana on Saturday evening, June 15. According to reports, the Minhaj Ul Uloom madrasa was transporting cattle to celebrate Bakrid when right-wing Hindu groups stopped the vehicle near the madrasa, leading to stone-pelting between Hindu and Muslim youths. The injured have now been admitted to Princess Esra Hospital for treatment.

An hour later, the madrasa was attacked again as the mob surrounded it. A video shows the mob with sticks, shouting Jai Shri Ram slogans and attacking cars and other buildings. Several people in the madrasa were injured in the attack and were taken to a hospital. The mob also reportedly vandalized a hospital where injured people were being treated. Police resorted to baton charges to disperse the mob.

Medak SP B Bala Swamy told TNM that eight people have been arrested and remanded in custody. “Six of them are Hindus and two are Muslims. It is not yet clear whether they are politically active. The arrests have been made because of the violence that took place. Six Muslims are absconding, we will arrest them soon,” he said.

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaddudin Owaisi spoke to Telangana State Chief Minister Ravi Gupta and demanded strict action against the mob. Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) was implemented in the district and police increased patrolling in the area.

Karwan MP Kausar Mohiuddin said the orthopedic hospital near Medak police station was surrounded by Hindu Vahini and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members, adding that Muslim shops and establishments were targeted by the mob.
