Houston Poodle Wins Prize at Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show

A miniature poodle from Houston made its mark by winning the title of “Best in Show” Tuesday at the Westminster Kennel Club’s 148th annual dog show.

GCHG CH Surrey Sage, a 3-year-old dog, outscored more than 2,500 dogs among seven group finalists to win the title at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York after two days of Best Breed, Group and Best exposure. competition, according to a press release. Sage’s master is Kaz Hosaka and his owner is Cathy Guache.

“The Poodle Club of America congratulates GCHG Surrey Sage, breeders Kathleen Wallen and Kaz Hosaka, and owner Cathy Gauche, on winning BEST IN SHOW at the Westminster Kennel Club, 2024,” the Poodle Club of America posted on Facebook.

Not only did the miniature poodle score a win for the Bayou City, but Hosaka announced his retirement after competing in 45 Westminster dog shows. His last victory was in 2022 with a miniature poodle named “Spice”.

The Westminster Kennel Club is America’s oldest organization dedicated to the sport of showing dogs, according to the press release. This is the 148th year the organization has hosted its all-breed dog show, the second longest running sporting event in the country. The Empire State Building lit up Westminster’s purple and gold colors to celebrate this year’s event.
