“Take care of each other”

As college students return to the city and visit local bars and nightclubs, police are once again warning students and the public about adulterated drinks and date rape drops.

“As the first weekend of the new school year approaches, the department would like to remind all students and the public of the dangers of odorless, colorless and tasteless drugs such as Rohypnol (also known as Roofie) being mixed into the drinks of unsuspecting victims,” Boston Police wrote in a warning to the public.

Other drugs that are often used in a similar way are GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyric acid) or ketamine.

These drugs and substances can cause disorientation, confusion, temporary paralysis or unconsciousness, among a number of other symptoms, and “make the potential victim vulnerable to the suspect’s intentions,” police said.

“While BPD encourages everyone to look out for one another in social situations by creating a ‘buddy system’ to avoid separations, there are steps you can take on your own to ensure your personal safety,” BPD added.
