Kamala Harris to address major teachers union promoting transgender theory in schools

In one of her first speeches after becoming the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to address the nation’s second-largest teachers union as the group reviews a long list of left-wing priorities at its annual gathering, including pushing for transgender policies for children.

Harris is scheduled to address the American Federation of Teachers, led by its controversial president, Randi Weingarten, on Thursday as the organization is busy voting to adopt a litany of far-left resolutions at its 88th annual convention in Houston.

The union voted unanimously to endorse Kamala Harris for president on Monday, becoming the first union to do so after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race on Sunday. “She has always fought for us — to reduce the costs we pay, for reproductive rights, for worker empowerment and to protect communities from gun violence. As President Biden said in endorsing Kamala Harris, she has his full support to be the Democratic nominee for president,” Weingarten said in a statement.

The White House said Harris’ keynote address would be a “continuation of her ongoing efforts to fight for working people across America, including as chair of the White House Task Force on Worker Organizing and Empowerment.”

Meanwhile, AFT members have passed other resolutions condemning school choice, which allows children from primarily low-income areas to exit failing schools, calling the policies “insidious,” saying they “increase school segregation,” and claiming that schools “discriminate” against “LGBTQIA+” students because they do not all conform to gender theory.

The union also passed a resolution containing a litany of grievances against “far-right MAGA” Republicans because Republican-led states have prioritized policies such as parental rights and notification requirements for transgender programs and claims among students, as well as school choice.

The resolution also claims that Republican-led states have adopted policies that “prohibit the teaching of history and concepts opposed by those in power,” despite the fact that the AFT has endorsed teaching schoolchildren about Nikole Hannah-Jones’ pseudo-history 1619 Project.

Another claim in the resolution states that Republicans “allow the widespread banning of books from schools and libraries to their detriment,” even though the books Republicans have sought to remove from schools are typically those that contain pornographic and even child-rearing material, including illustrations.

The teachers union also condemned moves to restrict abortion and gender transitions for children in the resolution, saying that restricting irreversible medical interventions for children is “discriminatory” despite the significant and growing body of evidence that the drugs and procedures are not supported by scientific research or are dangerous.

The teachers union resolution also calls former President Donald Trump a “Nazi” and says the Supreme Court has given him the right to lead a coup or assassinate his political rivals. Similar comments have been widely condemned by conservatives, who have argued that fearmongering around the Republican presidential nominee may have contributed to the attempted assassination of Trump earlier this month.

While the convention is still in session and all the resolutions that need to be voted on have not yet had a chance, the AFT’s book of proposals is also full of far-left priorities, such as “stop enabling genocide: end U.S. military aid to Israel” and “commit to ending ‘life on alert’ for physical and psychological violence against LGBTQIA+ youth and adults,” which endorse a plethora of gender ideological priorities. The book of proposals includes a proposal supporting the right of biological boys to play on girls’ sports teams.

Another proposal would see the AFT support “Black Lives Matter at School,” a K-12 movement launched by supporters of the violent organization to push children to become social justice activists, as well as to get rid of police in schools.
