Houston Named Best Large City to Live in the United States: 2024 Report

(NEXSTAR) — The United States is a vast country, filled with very different cities — from coastal cities to mountainous neighborhoods to small towns to sprawling metros, your options are almost overwhelming if you’re looking to move.

Of all the places to live in the United States, this is one Florida city that ranks as the best, according to the latest rankings from US News and World Report.


After examining the areas that people care about most, such as crime rates, quality of education, air quality and value, the report finds that Naples, Florida, ranks first among the states -United. Analysts pointed to the city’s “pristine beaches, sprawling golf courses.” classes, fine dining and shopping.

If you prefer more populated cities, US News ranked Houston, Texas, as the best place to live among those with more than 2.5 million residents (although it was ranked 97th overall).

Naples replaced Green Bay at the top of the list. The Wisconsin city, often at the top of U.S. News’ rankings, fell to 12th this year.

Here are the top 10 best places to live, according to the latest report:

  3. Colorado Springs, Colorado
  4. Greenville, South Carolina
  5. Charlotte, North Carolina
  6. Raleigh, North Carolina
  7. Huntsville, Alabama
  8. Virginia Beach, Virginia
  9. Austin, TX
  10. Boulder, Colorado

While Naples was touted for its beaches, Trip Advisor previously ranked Siesta Beach, in Florida’s Sarasota County, about 185 miles to the north, as the second best in the country behind Hawaii’s Ka’anapali Beach.

U.S. News also looked at cities based on their appeal to retirees. None of the places listed above made the top 10. Instead, Pennsylvania dominated, with seven of its cities ranking among the best places to retire, including Harrisburg, ranked No. 1.
