ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – A robbery suspect killed by Abilene police has been identified and two officers have been placed on leave in connection with the deadly shooting.

John Kenney Dutton, 70, was identified as the suspect who was shot by officers in the United Supermarket parking lot in the 900 block of N Willis Street about 2 p.m. Monday.

A news release from the Abilene Police Department said a United Supermarkets employee called police after Dutton allegedly pulled out a knife and demanded money from the register. Employees also said they were able to lock him outside the store after he left the store.

When officers arrived on scene, they found Dutton in the parking lot still holding the knife.

The release states that Dutton failed to comply with commands to produce the weapon and was unaffected by a Taser, which is why officers opened fire.

Two officers are currently on leave, which is mandatory following an officer-involved shooting.

The Texas Rangers are assisting the Abilene Police Department in this investigation.
