Man arrested for murder of woman and arson

SAN PABLO – Authorities arrested a 35-year-old man Thursday on suspicion of killing a woman and setting her body on fire at San Pablo Creek earlier this month.

According to San Pablo police, Contra Costa County firefighters found the body around 1:25 a.m. on July 2 while responding to a fire report near the 1900 block of 20th Street.

Investigators were unable to immediately determine her identity or cause of death, but an autopsy later revealed she had suffered a severe blow to the head, police said.

The identity of the 40-year-old victim was not disclosed on Friday.

According to police, investigators identified William Ramirez as a suspect and a warrant was issued for his arrest on charges of murder and arson.

Both Ramirez and the woman are homeless, police said.

On Thursday morning, officers executed a search warrant in the 1800 block of 23rd Street and took Ramirez into custody. Police said they also seized evidence linking him to the murder.

Based on the warrant, Ramirez was taken to the Martinez Detention Center. He will remain in custody until the prosecution files charges against him.
