Luna Castro-Hernandez, a ninth-grader at North Springs High School, won a scholarship to Georgia Tech’s summer architecture program.

“Luna’s achievement is exceptional, as it is rare for a ninth grader to earn such a prestigious scholarship,” Sharmila Durai, CTAE North Springs engineering teacher, said in a news release. “This achievement highlights the excellence and dedication of our CTAE-Engineering program. Luna’s success is a testament to the impact of our program and its ability to provide exceptional opportunities for our students.

She will live on campus with current architecture students who will help lead design exercises for Georgia Tech’s summer program July 7-19.

Students will gain hands-on experience in drawing, creating and testing design ideas for an architectural project, the release said. Campers will understand the path to a career as an architect. They will also leave with a design project ready for their portfolio. The Pre-College Architecture Studio exposes students to a wide range of creative possibilities that will serve as inspiration for the next generation of future designers.

The scholarship is a collaborative effort between the CTAE (Career, Technical and Agricultural Education) engineering program and the Bill Harrison Foundation, according to the release.

Students in the summer program will use cutting-edge technology and software on a design studio project. They will meet and learn from School of Architecture faculty, the release said. There will be a city tour where they will sketch along the Beltline, Midtown, MODA, the High Museum and Piedmont Park. They will visit architectural firms where they will meet Georgia Tech graduates at work. Time for fun will be set aside with movie night, bowling and swimming on campus.
