Houston police officers shot and killed two men Tuesday (April 9) in Waller County while trying to arrest one on felony charges.

Officers located the 19-year-old suspect around 4:30 p.m. in the 45200 block of U.S. 290 in Prairie View, said Larry Satterwhite, HPD executive assistant chief. The suspect was wanted for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, deadly conduct, theft and unlawful carrying of a weapon, he said.

An investigation led authorities to Prairie View, where a man and woman were sitting with the suspect in a white Dodge Charger. As authorities approached in marked and unmarked vehicles to arrest the suspect, two men got out of the Charger and fired at the officers, Satterwhite said.

One of the gunmen had a semi-automatic pistol modified to fire fully automatic bullets, he said.

Two officers returned fire, striking both men, Satterwhite said. Life Flight took the men to Texas Medical Center, where they are being treated.

No officers were injured, but both police vehicles were hit by gunfire.

The Texas Rangers will investigate the shooting. The officers who fired their weapons – HPD employees for 3 and 5 years – will be on administrative leave during the investigation.
