Houston crime: Accident leads to shooting, hospital chase

A passenger in a truck was shot in the head, police said. The car chased the truck as it headed to a hospital.

HOUSTON — A crash on the North Loop set off a series of events that led to the brief closure of a hospital early Sunday morning, Houston police said.

The incident began around 1 a.m. when a truck and car crashed on the North Loop in Homestead. The truck reportedly fled the scene, but was followed by the car north on Homestead until they stopped north of Tidwell Road. Police said an argument broke out until family members of those in the truck showed up and tried to drive the car away.

As the truck took off, people in the car began shooting, according to HPD. A passenger in the truck was hit in the head at least once. The truck began to rush toward an area hospital, but the car allegedly continued to pursue them. The chase ended in the parking lot of LBJ Hospital on Kelley Street.

A security guard working security at the hospital noticed this and quickly shut down the hospital.

HPD said someone in the car fired another shot before taking off.

The person who was shot in the head was in critical condition and was transported to another hospital for better care. No other injuries were reported.

Police said they arrested one person from the truck. They were still looking for the shooter(s).

Investigators were working with the hospital to review security footage. They also spoke with witnesses at the scene of the first shooting.

If you have any information about what happened, you are asked to contact HPD at 713-884-3131 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-8477.
