Two 14-year-olds from Sisters killed in dirt bike accident on Forest Service Road northwest of Sisters

They were wearing helmets, officials say; “speed and different terrain” cited as causes of the accident

SISTERS, Ore. (KTVZ) – Two 14-year-old Sisters residents were killed Wednesday night when their dirt bike crashed on a logging road about nine miles northwest of Sisters, Deschutes County sheriff’s officials said Thursday.

Deputies and other first responders were dispatched to the reported accident on Forest Service Road 1028 south of Skylight Cave around 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sergeant Jason Wall said.

Four teenagers were riding two dirt bikes when two of them, a 14-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl, failed to reach their destination, Wall said.

The other two drivers, a 15-year-old male and a 15-year-old female, also from Sisters, checked the area and found that the other two had crashed and were seriously injured.

The sergeant said the 15-year-olds began life-saving measures and called 911. A passerby helped the teens until officers arrived and took over life-saving measures, Wall said. Paramedics arrived a short time later and continued life-saving measures, but both teens were pronounced dead at the scene.

“Speed and varying terrain appear to have been factors in the crash,” Wall said in a press release. He also told NewsChannel 21 that all four riders were wearing helmets at the time.

Sheriff’s detectives went to the scene and were assisted by Oregon State Police in the accident investigation and reconstruction. Wall said a medical examiner was also called to the scene.

The sheriff’s office has notified the affected families but is not releasing the names of the accident victims because they are minors, Wall said.

The Sheriff’s Office was also assisted by the Black Butte Ranch Police Department and the Sisters-Camp Sherman Rural Fire District.
