Battle of the Band Rebroadcasts “The Legacy of HBCU Marching Bands”

Texas Southern University will be one of the historically black colleges and universities highlighted in the rebroadcast of “The Legacy of HBCU Marching Bands” in celebration of Black Music Month in June.

The Pepsi National Battle of the Bands will air the film which pays homage to the rich heritage and continuing legacy of HBCU marching bands. Eight top bands from the 2023 Pepsi National Battle of the Bands will be featured.

The group’s performances include:

“HBCU bands represent the heart of our community, and their performances continue to entertain, uplift and unite us. It is a privilege to once again share this vibrant part of our cultural heritage,” said Derek Webber, executive producer of the National Battle of the Bands. , in a report.

The TSU marching band will also be featured in the film. The group was formed at the Houston College for Negroes — TSU’s former name — in 1945-46, when servicemen were returning from World War II. In the late 1960s, the marching band was given the name “Ocean of Soul” by a local radio broadcast that appeared at numerous professional football games and during the 1973 Battle of the Bands, according to the band’s website. the university.

The rebroadcast offers a second chance to experience a heartfelt tribute to the musicians and communities who continue to inspire with their rhythm, dedication and groundbreaking performances, according to the press release. Viewers will learn the history of HBCU marching bands and explore their evolution and significant contribution to American culture.

The film will air in Houston on Saturday, June 15 at 12 p.m. on the CW.
