Supreme Court issues statement of reasons for suspension of Interior Minister Lamichhane

KATHMANDU, June 2: The Supreme Court (SC) has served an interim order to the petitioners seeking suspension of Rastriya Swatantra Party leader Rabi Lamichhane from his post as deputy prime minister and home minister. A single judge bench Til Prasad Shrestha on Sunday invited both the parties for talks before issuing an interim order.

Lawyer Anupam Bhattarai filed the plea against Lamichhane. The court has scheduled the next hearing for June 10, 2024.

The petition calls for the suspension of Lamichhane due to his alleged involvement in a cooperative fraud case.

The complainant argues that Lamichhane’s continued stay in office could hinder the investigation into the cooperative fraud allegations.

A writ petition seeking the dismissal of Home Minister Lamichhane and quashing of the Attorney General’s writ was earlier dismissed by Chief Justice Bimal Paudel. However, responding to a petition filed against the dismissal, the Supreme Court bench of Justice Tek Prasad Dhungana ordered the registration of the writ petition last Wednesday.
