Where do the Sabers rank in playoff wins since 2009?

In 2024, the Buffalo Sabers extended their playoff drought to 13 seasons, but that’s not the only infamous milestone they’ve “accomplished.” Since 2009, over the last 15 seasons, the Sabers have also failed to win a single playoff series.

To be more specific, Buffalo’s last playoff victory came in 2007 against the New York Rangers. This was the year the Sabers also “won” the “regular season championship” with 113 points, giving the franchise its first and only Presidents’ Trophy.

But it’s not all doom and gloom in the Queen City, as the Sabres, ironically enough, have rehired the coach who led them to this latest playoff victory for 2024-25, Lindy Ruff. Maybe Ruff can help them climb out of the No. 32 rankings — yes, that counts the Vegas Golden Knights and Seattle Kraken, who began play in 2017 and 2021, respectively — for the upcoming season.

Fans may also find comfort in the fact that if the Sabers earned a trip to the 2025 playoffs and won a series, they would arguably be tied with their biggest rival, the Toronto Maple Leafs, assuming the latter do not also win their second series in this same period of time.

With Ruff back in action and Seth Appert also at the helm as an assistant, with a young team that should no longer be considered the youngest in the NHL, it’s possible that the Blue and Gold will emerge from the doldrums of the NHL and win at least one series.

But the Atlantic Division could be more competitive than ever, with a former Stanley Cup champion taking over for the Maple Leafs behind the bench while the Florida Panthers show no signs of slowing down. The Detroit Red Wings are on the rise, and the Boston Bruins won’t experience the same roster turnover that affected them last summer.
