‘Fully involved’ dumpster fire reported at construction site of The Clove, 0 million redevelopment in Buffalo Grove – Chicago Tribune

The Buffalo Grove Fire Department is investigating the cause of a fire that broke out Friday afternoon at The Clove construction site in the northwest suburbs.

The Clove is a massive $150 million redevelopment project under construction that is expected to include 297 luxury residences, retail and dining establishments, and a park.

According to a village news release, on Friday around 2:30 p.m., firefighters were called to the scene in the 200 block of McHenry Road for a report of a “large garbage trailer on fire.” .

“Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed that a large open-top dumpster semi-trailer was fully involved,” the release said.

The fire and smoke were directly affecting the seven-story residential building under construction at the site, the release said. But firefighters took steps to extinguish the fire “quickly” so it did not completely spread to the building.

The building was evacuated and no injuries were reported, authorities said in the release.

The Clove is where Buffalo Grove’s downtown shopping area once stood. Kensington Development Partners purchased the 22-acre site in 2020 with the goal of creating a modern central entertainment and residential district. After years of vacancy, downtown was partially demolished in August 2022 to make way for the new $150 million mixed-use redevelopment project.

Several restaurants are already open on site, and the planned 297-unit luxury residential building and green space are also part of the redevelopment plans.

Buffalo Grove officials told the Pioneer Press in late 2023 that the construction project is on schedule, with a grocery store set to anchor the site, scheduled to open this summer. The apartment building was expected to be completed before the end of 2026.

It was not immediately clear Friday how or if the fire might impact the construction schedule.

Village Manager Dane Bragg previously called The Clove “the largest redevelopment project in the history of Buffalo Grove.”
