37-year-old man charged with alleged rape of a minor

Police on Tuesday arraigned 37-year-old Chinonso Nwaiwu at the Children’s Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Court in Awka, Anambra State, southeastern Nigeria, for allegedly insulting a 13-year-old girl.

The defendant is accused of three counts: illicit sexual intercourse, bodily harm and exploitation.

However, he pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Prosecutor CR Akara said the accused committed the offenses on November 16 at Plastic Estate, Oba.

According to Ms Akara, the offenses violated Section 4(1) of the Anambra Prohibition of Violence Against Persons Act, 2017 and Section 35 of the Anambra Child Rights Act Anambra2004.

The trial judge Frieden Otti ordered the defendant to be placed in a correctional facility.

The judge adjourned the case to June 14.
