PM Modi assures support after nine people die in heavy rains and 19 districts face flash floods

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah held talks with the Chief Ministers of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to assess the severe flood situation in both the states. They assured that all possible central assistance would be provided to the flood-hit areas. Telangana, in particular, has been badly affected by the incessant rains and Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy directed the entire government machinery to remain on high alert as the death toll in rain-related incidents is reportedly at nine.

Telangana – Latest Flood News

  • Prime Minister Modi spoke to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and enquired about the situation in these states following the heavy rains and floods. He assured that the Central government would provide all possible support to overcome this challenge. News agency PTI reported.
  • Amit Shah, during his visit to Naidu and Reddy, assured the Union government of all possible help in dealing with the rains and floods. News agency ANI reported. The Telangana Chief Minister briefed Shah about the damage caused by the heavy rains and floods, a press release from the Chief Minister said on Sunday evening. Revanth Reddy also explained the measures taken by the state government to prevent deaths.
  • Nine persons died in separate rain-related incidents as heavy rains continued in many parts of the state, including Hyderabad, PTI reported.
  • The Telangana government has issued a flash flood warning for 19 districts and asked citizens to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary. Ranga Reddy, Hyderabad, Medchal, Vikarabad and Sangareddy districts are forecast to be at low to moderate risk of flash floods.


  • Chief Minister Revanth Reddy held an emergency meeting with ministers, officials and elected representatives on Sunday. He personally contacted ministers including Bhatti Vikramarka, N Uttam Kumar Reddy, Tummala Nageshwar Rao, Damodara Raja Narasimha and Jupalli Krishna Rao to oversee the relief efforts in the affected areas, PTI reported.
  • The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert, forecasting very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in districts such as Adilabad, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Kamareddy, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, Narayanpet, Jogulamba Gadwal, Mahbubabad and Jangaon from Sunday morning to the next day. Hyderabad and its surrounding districts are also experiencing persistent rainfall, leading to significant flooding in many parts of the city.


  • Heavy rains have affected train services on the South Central Railway (SCR). Several trains were cancelled, partially cancelled or diverted. A serious incident occurred when a portion of the gravel under the railway track was washed away near Kesamudram in Mahabubabad district, stranding passengers at Kesamudram railway station.


  • Due to the heavy rains, streams and rivers have swollen in several districts, disrupting road connectivity between villages and further paralyzing normal life. The water level of the Godavari river at Bhadrachalam in Bhadradri Kothagudem district continued to rise, reaching 27 feet on Sunday morning.


  • In Warangal district, passengers of a Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) bus had to spend the night in the vehicle after floodwaters inundated the road near Topanapalli, PTI reported.

    In Kodad town in Suryapet district, two cars and an autorickshaw were washed away by floods. The body of a man was found in one of the cars. The fate of the other passengers is unknown.

  • Dr Nunavath Ashwini, a promising junior scientist from ICAR – National Institute of Biotic Stress Management, Raipur, lost her life when she was swept away by the floods in Telangana, reported India Today. Dr Ashwini and her father Nunawat Motilal, both residents of Gangaram Thanda in Singareni mandal, Khammam district, were on their way to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad when the disaster struck.

    Her car was swept away by the overflowing Akeruvagu stream near Purushothamaiahgudem in Maripeda Mandal. The stream, swollen by incessant rains, had destroyed a bridge and her vehicle fell into the raging waters.

    In a final phone call to friends and family, Dr Ashwini and her father described how the water in their car was rising rapidly, trapping them with no way to escape. The call ended abruptly, leaving their loved ones in a state of uncertainty. After hours of desperate searching, rescue teams discovered Dr Ashwini’s body near Akeruvagu Bridge on Sunday, India Today reports. Efforts are ongoing to find her father Motilal, who remains missing.

  • The Disaster Management Authority has set up a special control room at the State Secretariat with telephone number 040-23454088 to monitor the situation and coordinate rescue operations. In addition, the Chief Minister has directed all district collectors, police superintendents and officials of the revenue, irrigation and municipal administrations to visit the flood-affected areas and take immediate relief measures.
  • Telangana Development Planning Society reported that Huzurnagar in Suryapet district recorded the highest rainfall, with 299.8 mm falling between 8:30 pm on Saturday and 6:00 am on Sunday. Close behind was Inugurthy in Mahabubabad district with 298 mm, while Chilkur in Suryapet district recorded 297.8 mm of rainfall. In addition, several areas in Mahabubabad, Khammam and Suryapet districts reported rainfall ranging between 277 and 296 mm.
  • Authorities have urged the population to remain vigilant, especially in low-lying areas, and to contact emergency services if necessary. The Prime Minister has also urged the population not to leave their homes unless absolutely necessary.
