Delta COO Mike Spanos to step down in September, company confirms

Delta Air Lines Chief Operating Officer Mike Spanos will leave the company in September.

Delta CEO Ed Bastian said Spanos told him earlier this summer that he would explore other career opportunities.

On Friday, Bastian told Delta staff that Spanos had found another position and would leave early next month to take on a new role.

Bastian said that under Spanos’ leadership, Delta has improved its performance and continues to lead the airline industry in all operational metrics.

Delta’s CEO also said the company had “seen a significant reduction in injuries in the first half of 2024 compared to last year” and that Spanos had worked closely with the finance and commercial teams to improve asset utilization and the company’s future strategy.

“Mike was a great admirer of Delta’s culture and shared our core values ​​of always putting people first. He embraced our servant leadership philosophy and built strong connections with the people of Delta through his humble and empathetic leadership style. At this time, we have no plans to replace him,” Bastian said.

Going forward, “John Laughter, EVP and COO and President of Delta TechOps, and Allison Ausband, EVP and Chief Customer Experience Officer, will report directly to Bastian.

The company did not disclose information about Spanos’ next destination.
