Kuwait’s Emir dissolves parliament and suspends certain articles of the constitution

The Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, announced today that the National Assembly has been dissolved and certain constitutional provisions have been suspended for a period not exceeding four years. He stressed that the election of the Prime Minister is a constitutional right of the head of state and should not be interfered with.

In a speech addressed to the people, he declared: “Our country has gone through difficult times and we must give advice to overcome these circumstances,” and condemned actions that “violate the country’s constitutional norms.” He also noted that some have tried to “close all avenues to avoid our harsh reality.”

He continued: “Some have crossed boundaries that cannot be ignored and tried to encroach on the prince’s power.” He added: “We have faced intolerable difficulties and obstacles.” The Amir of Kuwait emphasized in his speech, that no one is above the law and that no one should exploit democracy to destroy the state. At the same time, he reiterated that the dignity of the security personnel would not be endangered.

He further stated: “No one is above the law and anyone who unjustly embezzles public funds will face consequences, regardless of their position. We will bring the perpetrators to justice.” The Amir of Kuwait stressed that corruption in the country has infiltrated security institutions, the economy and the judiciary in recent years. He stressed that it is unacceptable to hinder the nation’s interests and waste public funds.
