12 cooling centers to open Monday in Buffalo

In anticipation of the extreme heat hitting the region, 12 cooling centers will be open in Buffalo starting Monday.

Mayor Byron Brown’s office cited National Weather Service forecasts of potential temperatures in the 90s, as well as high humidity, for opening the cooling centers.

“Cooling centers are an important part of our city’s emergency response plan during extreme heat events,” Brown said in a statement. “It is particularly critical to ensure that these sites are open and accessible to people who are homeless or those who do not have adequate cooling in their homes. These conditions will be particularly difficult for our elderly and young children. At the cooling centers, people will have access to clean drinking water, a place to cool off, and outlets in case they need to charge their phones. It is important for all of us to take the necessary precautions. to stay cool and hydrated, but keep an eye out for your more vulnerable neighbors.
