Shooting outside Whole Foods in Streeterville triggers large Chicago police presence – NBC Chicago

Some streets in downtown Chicago were closed, and a heavy police and SWAT presence was reported outside a Whole Foods Market near Grand Avenue and Fairbanks Street Friday morning after shots were fired.

According to police, a verbal argument broke out between a 50-year-old man and an unknown person in front of the building at around 8:36 a.m., after which the person pulled out a firearm and began shooting in the man’s direction.

The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the left shoulder, police said. He was taken to a nearby hospital and was last reported in good condition.

A weapon was seized at the crime scene, police added.

Photos and videos from the scene showed several police cars and yellow crime scene tape blocking the busy intersection near the Whole Foods store in Streeterville, 255 E. Grand Avenue.

An ambulance was also seen near the building.

Parents of students at a school in the same building said a field trip was postponed because of the police presence, as students at the school were told to close their blinds and stay indoors.

In an interview with NBC Chicago, an employee said he saw a man harassing people and heard gunshots. The employee said the man then ran into the Whole Foods parking garage.

A neighbor who wished to remain anonymous told NBC Chicago that she also heard gunshots and saw a man holding his shoulder.

According to police, no one has been arrested and the investigation is ongoing.
