announcement

May 21, 2024

As of Friday, May 17, several of ESO’s network and communications services have been shut down to allow for the delivery of an important software upgrade. The upgrade is being implemented in response to a cybersecurity incident. In addition to the shutdown, mitigating this threat also included limiting communications regarding the incident so as not to jeopardize ESO’s cybersecurity response plan.

As of Tuesday, May 21st, email services have been restored and the ESO website is back online. Other services, such as the ESO and ALMA science archives, are expected to be restored in the coming days.

ESO’s IT team is working with a cyber security consultant to detect and remove malicious software from all ESO computers and to investigate the attack and its consequences. If it turns out that any of our stakeholders have been affected, we will inform them immediately.

ESO observations were not affected as our observatories largely operate over separate networks. The ELT construction remains unaffected.
