During preliminary interrogation, two of the accused confessed to the crime of raping the woman on September 11 in Mhow district of Indore.

Madhya Pradesh police on Friday arrested three men on suspicion of attacking two young army officers and raping their girlfriend near Mhow in Indore district, an official said, adding that all six accused were now in custody.

During preliminary interrogation, two of the accused confessed to raping the woman on September 11 in Mhow district of Indore. A departmental inquiry has also been ordered against the two young army officers who were attacked in the incident, an officer told news agency PTI.

The criminal records of all the accused are being checked to ascertain their involvement in similar incidents in the past, DIG Nimish Agarwal said.

“It is a remote stretch and many people may have come across similar incidents and not reported them. The accused will be questioned on this stretch,” the official added.

The six accused attacked the two young army officers and raped one of their two friends at a tourist spot 30 kilometers from the Mhow military camp in the early hours of September 11, police claimed.

“An internal departmental inquiry has been ordered against the two trainee (army) officers. It is underway and is being headed by a senior officer,” an army officer from Mhow was quoted as saying by PTI.

Initial investigation revealed that two army officers and their two girlfriends arrived at the tourist attraction at 11pm on Tuesday. All of them heard loud music in the deserted area, police said. Hearing the music late at night, the six accused came to the spot and committed the crime.

Congress politicizes Mhow crime

The Madhya Pradesh Congress on Friday alleged that some BJP workers and their aides were behind the Mhow crime. The BJP, however, refuted these claims and accused the Congress of spreading “misconceptions” on the sensitive issue.

Congress MP Jitu Patwari said, “Behind the Mhow incident, the names of BJP workers, their relatives and also relatives of other party leaders have emerged… This shows that mafia and rapists are ruling there and others are indulging in such acts without any fear of the government.”

Reacting to the statement, BJP state president VD Sharma said that the investigation in the case will not find anyone guilty. “The Congress is trying to create a wrong perception in the matter. If any culprit is found to be involved in such crimes, the government will not spare him,” he said.
