Aleix Espargaro accident in Assen Sprint: “Further examinations in hospital”

Already struggling with pain following a bad crash on Friday, Aleix Espargaro lost control of his RS-GP in the dreaded penultimate corner of the final lap of the Assen MotoGP Sprint race on Saturday.

The Aprilia rider, who is traditionally strong in this corner, was about to overtake Fabio di Giannantonio, who was in fifth place, in the next chicane when the accident happened.

The Spaniard rolled over and landed in the gravel bed with a violent rollover before coming to a stop.

The 34-year-old, who will retire at the end of this season, was seen tending to his arm as stewards helped him leave.

Aprilia reported that initial examinations indicated that neither Espargaro nor wildcard rider Lorenzo Savadori, who crashed earlier in the race, “suffered from serious symptoms.”
