Fatal accident involving KLM E190 at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

Airport statement

A statement just released by Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) said: “Today there was a terrible incident in which a person ended up in an aircraft engine.”

“Our thoughts are with the family and we extend our condolences to the passengers and colleagues who witnessed the incident. The Royal Military Police are currently conducting investigations.”

Reports leaked on social media provide further context to this afternoon’s incident:

First reported at 15:10 local time

Authorities were first notified of the death at 3:10 p.m. local time. Passengers and crew members were on board the aircraft when the accident occurred.

The aircraft was apparently preparing for departure on a scheduled flight to Billund, Denmark and had its engines running.

Authorities have yet to confirm whether the man was a private individual or whether he worked for the airline or the airport.

Passengers disembarked from the aircraft

According to local news source NL Times, all passengers were disembarked from the departing plane.

The Marechaussee, the military branch responsible for policing at the airport, subsequently issued a statement.

“All passengers and staff on the affected flight have disembarked and are being cared for.”
