‘More Safety:’ Residents React to Weekend Shooting on Main Street

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — Several neighbors and business owners are concerned after Buffalo Police say a 42-year-old man was shot and killed on Main Street Saturday evening.

A Buffalo deputy told the 7 News reporter that the shooting happened just outside the Luxor restaurant.

The victim later died at ECMC.

Some business owners, like Indian restaurant Tandoori Hut, say they just want the area not to attract more gun violence.

“In this restaurant, people sometimes fight because of excessive alcohol consumption,” says Sharan Brar, owner of the restaurant. “So it’s not the first time. This is like the third or fourth time here.

One worker says she would like to see more police deployed to the area on weekends.

“Visitors don’t feel safe because nighttime shootings are not a good thing and at night more police officers are needed here,” says Misha Bishnoi. “Actually, there’s only one police car, but I think there should be four or five.”

The restaurant and nightclub were closed by the city.

Councilor Rasheed Wyatt says this type of incident doesn’t usually happen in his district.

“It’s not typical of this neighborhood and the commissioner sent me a text saying they were going to close this restaurant,” he said. “And I guess what happened on Hertel, they’re trying to use the same logic for this one.”

Others say they hope the city will think more about protecting students who reside in the area.

“It’s quite worrying to see this happening in this area, especially how busy it is and how many students are passing through, even though it’s summer vacation there are still a lot of students passing.”

Councilor Wyatt hopes his district is aware of the additional policing measures being put in place.

“I hope the neighbors understand that we haven’t forgotten you, that the city continues to make extra efforts to make this area safer,” he said.

Police say this shooting remains under investigation.
