4 students were injured in 3 violent incidents at New York schools

NEW YORK (PIX11) – A call for metal detectors to be installed at all New York City public schools after four students were slashed or stabbed inside and outside of schools in three districts on Tuesday.

“Whether people like it or not, there should be metal detectors in schools. Metal detectors are a proven way to make schools safer than they are,” Gregory Floyd, president of Teamsters Local 237, which represents School Safety Agents, told PIX11 News.

Floyd said two of the three schools where the lacerations occurred did not search students for weapons.

In Queens, an 18-year-old was stabbed in the back and arm outside the Queens High School of Teaching on Commonwealth Boulevard, according to police.

In Manhattan, two students ages 15 and 17 stabbed each other at the High School of Graphic Communication Arts on West 49th Street, according to police. One man was stabbed in the upper body and the other received a cut to his face.

Police said a 15-year-old student was slashed by a 17-year-old student at the Evander Childs Campus in the Bronx at one o’clock in the afternoon. A source told PIX11 News that the teen cut the other teen’s neck with a scalpel during a gang-related incident. The 17-year-old was taken into custody.

We contacted the New York City Department of Education and Mayor Eric Adams’ office for a response to the request for metal detectors, but received no response.
